Xarth is descended from a long line of shoag shamen, born with the shoag equivalent of a silver spoon in his mouth. He was expected to be a shaman and he expected this himself. however because of his arrogance he failed his initiation and was cursed by a shoag deity with human form

Xarth is descended from a long line of shoag shamen's, born with the shog equivalent of a silver spoon in his mouth. He was expected to be a shamen and he expected this himself. However because of his arrogance he failed his initiation and was cursed by a shog diety with human form leaving shog lands, he travelled first to tauran, then west through human lands filled with people he does not understand very well.

When he reached the sea west of Dakar and couldn't go any farther, he wandered back to more populated lands. In Irill he was caught stealing food by a merchant, one who arranged for Xarth to go into the army in place of the Merchants son. Xarth did not enjoy his stint in the army, never really bonding with his mates, but he did learn to fight and to rely on his fellow soldiers. When he mustered out, he left Irill and continued to wander. He was in a tavern where things were starting to get ugly, when a stranger named Briz distracted the crowd. Xarth has been with Briz ever since, the first human he has really connected with, possibly the only one.

Xarth does not trust the Ifrit. He thinks they are arrogant and that being their champion will get him killed. But Xarth has had enough of running away from things. He is taking the aspect resolved champion of the Ifrit.

In the winter of 462 AH he was battling a demon in a summoning chamber below Tminir Tower when he fell to the creature. The demon drained all of his magic from his body - tore apart his connection to the Shadow Realms. This completely removed everything that still remained shoag within him, he can never go back. If not for Gia Sojourner he would have died. Only the spark of the Ifrit kept him alive.
