Languages

In general the lists below only cover the major language families and the specific languages that descend from them. In various areas there are specific dialects as the vast majority of any given population is not mobile enough to remove regional nuances.

The use of regional dialects can be used to great flair and effect during a specific moment of a game; however, the inability of player characters (PCs) to interact with each other or non-playing characters (NPCs) because of a difference in language is something that should occur only for a game-enhancement reason. If PCs and NPCs cannot reasonably communicate with each other it becomes frustrating for everyone involved.

If someone can speak a language within a family, then they can reasonably communicate with all languages within that family.

All languages listed below are ordered by the largest to the least number of speakers. So, if Language Family B has 10 million speakers, while Family A has only 1 million speakers - B will be listed before A. Within each family the lists also are ordered from greatest to least number of speakers. These lists are updated as of the current timeline.

Dead languages will be noted as such under the location column.

Locations listed in italics represent those area where a language is not the official or primary language of a region, but instead is spoken or understood by enough people to make life passable in large and border regions. As an example, there are Elves that speak Elvish in the Kingdom of Dakar, but they are far too few in number and isolated; however, there are enough people that can at least understand a smattering of Irillian (due to trade and previous conquest) that someone could live in most places only speaking Irillian.
