Irillian Legions

An Irillian legion traditionally numbers anywhere from 3,500 to 6,500 men. Each legion is divided into smaller Cohorts. The first two (2) were the largest in sized and comprised of the most experienced soldiers. Tradition dictates that they hold the right of the line. In addition, any skilled specialists (i.e. engineers, blacksmiths, builders, etc.) were placed into the first cohort; although they don't stand in the line of battle.

Throughout the history of the Legion the size of the Cohorts, and any further sub-elements, fluctuated as Legionary command was the fastest way for a commoner to rise in the political ranks. The wealthy and/or ennobled considered command of a legion to secure their path to the highest reaches of political power. The creation of “Shadow Legions” that exist only in name became a running joke among the legions.

In terms of military strength for most of its existence Irillian Legions are considered some of the finest troops on the field of battle. There are other mercenary groups and nations that may be better missiliers or calvary, but few can best the legion in combined arms.
