Kavasila

Kavasila is the oldest remaining Irillian settlement in the Selcarian Province. It was built by the legions as they crossed the Black River. Originally it served as a supply head for the Legions operating in the lands south of the Caragan Sea. There have been several battles and wars raged between the Irillian city of Eryx across the river. As Kavasila has grown, Eryx has shrunk. Over 70% of the ships making their transit down the Black River use the ports in Kavasila.

Kavasila is the second largest city in Selcaria.

Founding

The city was founded by the Legion III Scafati to serve as a supply point for the campaign to pacify the Selcarian Province. Senator Lucius Septimius was named Legatus and commanded five legions. Two legions moved along the shore of the Caragan Sea, while the other three moved farther south. These southern legions could only be supplied through Kavasila. Tons of food and supplies required sufficient craftsmen and warehouses. Workers brought their families transforming the military depot. Five years afterthe start of the campaign the town contained fifteen-hundred (1,500) people.

The first campaign ended in Y1302 when Lucius Septimius was killed during a uprising among the Pah'Shar slaves. For the next thirty (30) years the legions retreated from their most southern forts, consolidating their northern holdings. This allowed the Irillian Empire to supply its army from their towns on the Caragan Sea. Town growth stagnated at four thousand (4,000).

Black River Campaign

In Y1374 AE the Senate approved a campaign to control the Black River. The river was critical to move ships from the Caragan to the Serpente Sea, but entailed great risk. Pah tribes held the eastern shore, while the Dread Forest held the west. Supplies and legions once again moved through the town. Six legions were raised and marched along the eastern shore. As the campaigned continued supplies and men flowed into the town, swelling it to nearly ten thousand (10,000) people.

After a series of raids by the Pah'Shar against the town the Senate authorized the raising of the I Kavasila. The legion raised three outposts outside of the walls. Aux Unos, Aux Duo, and Aux Tres - each one manned by a full cohort. An encampment for three cohorts was built south of the town walls. The prime cohort held the town proper. The remaining Auxilia Calvary was encamped a days ride to the east.

The campaigned ended in Y1453 with many of the Pah'Shar tribes pushed back from the river. The legions manned a series of forts along the river, each housing three (3) cohorts. The I Kavasila was reduced to half strength and disbanded their Calvary. When the Pah'Shar burned Aux Duo in Y1480 the legion abandoned it rather than rebuild.

Holy Empire

The population of the town steadily trickled down seven thousand (7,000) over until the rise of the Holy Irillian Empire in 1482. The Second Empire raised more legions that at any other point in history. Over twenty (20) legions marched through Kavasila over the next five hundred (500) years. The town had grown into a city of nearly twelve thousand (12,000), overtaking its sister city Eryx across the river.

Treasure, slaves, soldiers, and citizens flowed through the city. The Black River was controlled by the sheer number of ships built in Kavasila over this time. The river was still dangerous, but caravans left the docks guarded by specialty built archer-ships. High walls crenelated walls provided archers with superior position to sweep the shoreline of any threat. This was the city's golden years.

Sacking

With the turning of a new era the once unstoppable holy legions were forced to retreat by the Ellendar Army. As the massive elven fleet swept the Caragan Sea of every ship they could catch some sheltered in the city's ports. The fall of the Holy Irillian Empire had little real effect on the city, except for refugees from cities and towns sacked by the elves that flooded across the river. Three times the elven navy attacked, but each time they were defeated.

In Y35 AH the elves sacked Eryx and although suffering horrendously, the city of Kavasila finally fell. The survivors scattered south as the city was razed.
