Lothar is the third son of Gottlieb Himmel, Baron of Hellbock and his second wife Lady Aidiel. His father founded the Order of Himmel along with Lady Arianna of Blue Heights to free Xianese slaves. Lothar was not interested in his father's work, so he joined his cousin working as a mercenary along the northern border of the Kingdom of Dakar.

During the Winter of 428 their mercenary company was caught in the Iron Mountains during a fierce blizzard. Cut off from the trails south, they struck towards a dwarven stadt their captain knew about. Unbeknownst to the mercenaries, a goblin encampment lay in their path. The ensuing battle was quick and deadly and only goblins remained to pick over the dead.

Drawn by the sounds of battle, Tobais Kuhn and his company arrived and killed the remaining goblins. The next morning Lothar awoke in Tobias' camp. He was told that he was the only survivor they found. Rather than leave the mountains, he signed on with Tobias. He fought side by side with Tobias for the next several years and when Tobias left for Celinus he traveled with him.
