Black Stag Tavern

The Black Stag Tavern is a narrow building in the Medaille District of Bornheim. It is run by two orcs, Kabar and Radha. Their kids have all grown up and left aboard ship for ports unknown, so they pick up help in the tavern when they can from whomever works hard. They keep the tavern clean and in good repair. They don't mind the occasional fight, but anyone drawing a blade or gang jumping someone will find that both of them more than a match.

Kabar is actually a above average cook. He has worked for several households in the city when he and Radha moved here. He has learned what spices and selections to people prefer, and although it is not to his taste, he has a good and steady hand. He is no trained chef making his way among the gentle folk, but for the stews, breads, and meats his customers prefer he is far better than they will get anywhere else.

Radha leaves her husband to cook, preferring her time in the cellar picking vegetables and brewing mead. She usually has several casks of ale she brews as well, but she is well-known for her mead. When apricots are in season her workload nearly triples. Many of the finest houses in the city will serve their guests her apricot brandy. Unlike others that simply flavor their brandy with apricots, Radha distills her apricots until they reach nearly 100 proof. It can deliver quite the smooth kick without a syrupy aftertaste.

They do not run an inn - there are no rooms for rent. Guests can sleep in the common room for a very reasonable cost. This includes a breakfast meal in the morning comprised of pan scrapings and whatever bread was left over from the previous night.

The Black Stag Tavern is three stories tall, plus a narrow and low cellar. The main floor comprises a common room with wood floors and low ceilings. The furniture and bar are both functional and unadorned. The only walled off area is the kitchen, which lacks any door. Kabar prefers to yell out to any customers that need to be kept in line. The kitchen only has a pair of tables, hearth, and space for barrels and crates.

The cellar is twisting and narrow, with a ceiling far too low for Radha. She has dug out several small lobes off the main hall for use in brewing and pickling. She tries to keep the hallway empty, but there is simply never enough room for what she needs. She cannot expand as the storm drains are nearby.

The second floor has two rooms for their hired help and any family their workers bring with them. If you work you get paid and fed, but not until the end of the night. If their workers need a room Radha rents them one of these rooms far cheaper than they can get anywhere else. These rooms used to be used by their children and Radha prefers that they are used by people she considers family. The other room is a storage room. It is always a mess with things stacked high or just pushed against the wall. It would be nearly impossible for someone to find something specific in the room, but you can always find something.

The third floor is only enclosed on the front of the building. Under the roof is Radha and Kabar's room and a small storage room/office they use. The back half of the building has been gutted and turned into a rooftop garden and small shed. Kabar grows and dries herbs from the north that are more expensive to purchase.
