Survival

Survival is broad skill covering virtually every sort of outdoor activity from riding horses to wilderness survival.

Riding

Survival is the skill used for riding all manner from beasts, from common horses to exotic elephants. The very exotic like dragons require a stunt to ride. Getting and maintaining a mount used Resources and possibly a character aspect.

Animal Handling

This covers all interactions with animals (non-sentient beings) from training to communicating with them, including beasts of burden, draft animals, and common pets. Survival replaces all social skills when interacting with non-sentient animals.

Most animals react in specific ways in specific situations, like a first impression. While a trained animal is not like to change its behavior; other animals will react to attempts to change its response. The animal uses its Resolve to defend against the character's Survival skill to see if the impression is favorable or not.

Breaking in Animals

Breaking a mount or training an animal is a both a composure and physical conflict between the trainer and animal. Composure attacks are Survival vs. the animal's Resolve, while physical attacks use the standard rules for conflicts. When one party is either taken out or concedes either the animal is broken of the trainer has failed.

Camouflage

You can use Survival to construct blinds and other ways to remain hidden. Given a good supply of materials on a Mediocre(+0) skill check you can create a block against being noticed. If you do not have time to build a full blind then using just a few measures you can use Survival as a complement skill for Stealth.

Scavenging

This covers being able to find something specific in the wilderness - rocks, vines, sticks, bones. The more specific the item the higher the difficulty. Finding sticks in the forest is a Mediocre(+0) roll - or no roll at all, but finding strong and straight sticks would be Fair(+2) as this adds two additional criteria.

Difficulty Likelihood Example
Mediocre(+0) Likely Wood or vine in a forest, food in season in fertile land
Good(+3) Possible Strong wood in swamp, food out of season or in the wrong place
Superb(+5) Unlikely Wood or drinking water in a desert
