Deceit

Deceit is the ability to lie through word and deed. Deceit typically is found behind rather than at the forefront of the action. Thus it is typically used to compliment or restrict other skills.

Lies

For simple deception Deceit is typically opposed by Empathy, Alertness, or Investigation, while a more complicated lie can turn into a social conflict. No matter how many shifts are generated Deceit cannot force a character to do something they oppose. A pacifist will not kill nor will a moral man steal. He may hold stolen goods if convinced they are not stolen, but this is not a easy form of mind control.

Disguise

A disguise depends on the proper props and cannot typically withstand long scrutiny. Those opposing the disguise get one Investigation roll per scene with a +1 for each Time Increment they are in contact with the disguised character. Casual inspection use Alertness in place of Investigation.

False Face Forward

A character can use Deceit in place of Rapport to defend against Empathy attempts to read them. Upon success the deceitful character can provide the reader with a false aspect.

Cat and Mouse

Instead of putting forward a false face, it is possible to use Deceit to turn the tables upon the Empathy reader. If the reader wins they gain an unknown aspect, but if Deceit wins the attacker will take Composure stress.
