Alertness

Alertness measures a character's passive awareness. If a character is actively looking for something then user Investigation instead.

Avoiding Surprise

Whenever a character is ambushed they may make an Alertness roll to avoid surprise. A failure gives the character a Mediocre(+0) defense for the surprise round.

Combat Initiative

Alertness determines initiative in any physical conflict.

Confusing Situations

When a character is in a confusing or disorientated environment (smoke, lots of activity, etc) a character's skill may be restricted by Alertness.

Passive Awareness

Alertness rolls are rare - Investigation is typically used when looking for something. Instead Alertness rolls represent your passive or sixth sense and is used when you might see something that you are not looking for - like a pit trap.
