Lyoness Cardai

A magician of patience who works Sir Adelson of Veneto teaching his children basic education. In return for her room, board, and a small purse - she can practice her craft in a small wooden shack on his lands. She is typically avoided by the commoners, who make the sign to ward off evil when she passes, but gets along well enough with Sir Adelson. Most people believe that she is also his mistress as she is still quite fetching for her age.

She is a skilled alchemist with a deep understanding of mortal flesh. She can cure, kill, and render your body nearly impossible to control as easily as mixing the proper ingredients. She does know some more direct magic, but is not very skilled in using it and very likely to harm herself in the process.

Lyoness was never a quick student. She was gifted enough that Master Quintillan of the Illysin Circle undertook her education, but she was still an apprentice years later when the other students had been granted the stole of journeyman. While some talked behind her back about warming the old man's bed, she knew that the hours she spent in his chamber was mixing up delicate potions to extend his life. He had been cursed and his body was falling apart - only her skill kept him alive, she was held back to keep him alive.

When Master Quintillan died he bequeathed to her not only all of his possessions, but a detailed letter supporting her for a Master's stole. She could have gone to the Imperial Collegia Magickia and secured a position among its masters, but instead she left for the frontier cities (i.e. Free Cities). She gained a position Sir Adelson after helping a retainer of his with a poisonous bite. She would teach his children letters and numbers, in turn she could continue her studies.

While there he took the ostler's son Duncan under her wing. He was the playmate of the knight's son, but more importantly he had a spark of talent. He potion making skills were not as strong, but she was skill enough in other areas to teach him. It saddened her when he was selected to follow Sir Gunther Strausberger, a northern knight of reknown.
