Lanzo Hourangson

High Priest of Karash in Bornheim

Lanzo was raised to the position of Dawn Watcher of Karash at the Temple of Luminous Kaskade in the city of Bornheim by the Sea and Storm Priests of the temple in 458 AH. This move was a calculated insult to the royalists in Bornheim as not only was the previous Dawn Watcher more friendly with the temple_of_light, but Lanzo was an outspoken critic of its Inquisition against Magicians.

He has clashed repeatedly and publicly with both Baron Donat Lange, Lord Marshall of Bornheim, but also with Bishop Stefa Slazak, Luminary of the Temple of Light. His is a man prone to boasting and willing to bluster and force his way though any obstacle that stands in the way. It is said that even the sea would part for him if he needed to cross the bay.

Like many native bornheimers, Lanzo was born to the sea. His father was a crabber, working a line of traps in a small village along the shadow of the Grey Bluffs of the Fuldelf Ridge. Lanzo was a accomplished swimmer and skilled hand with both sail and oar. His life changed when he was twelve (12) and a squall caught him and his friends past the reef.

The sea surged up as the wind and rain lashed at it. The boys struggled to keep their boat upright and make for the Hillocks Peak, a rocky outcropping near the reef. The boat capsized and threw them into the water. Lanzo managed to grab all of his friends except one and drag them to the peak. The last his friends saw of him that night is him diving into the water to rescue their last companion.

The boys were rescued the next morning, including the last of them, but there was no sign of Lanzo. His parents offered prayers to Karash for their son's spirit and the village praised his courage. It was over a month later when another summer storm lashed the coast. The door of longhouse where everyone was waiting it out crashed open and Lanzo stood in the doorway - his hair snowy white and his eyes stormy gray.

He had been touched by Karash and bound to some higher purpose. When news of his miracle reached the city, Heieik the Dawn Watcher, came to the village. Immediately after seeing the storms in the young boy's eyes and brought him back to the temple.

Temple Life

Lanzo was a natural when he arrived at the Temple of Luminous Kaskade; although things could have been far more difficult. Being marked by Karash would have set someone else apart, but Lanzo's easy smile and willingness to help won over those who might have been jealous of him. He always seemed to have time to help those who were willing to help themselves - to sacrifice for those who could not.

He rose to prominence in the temple, but it was the continuous difficulty between the Royalists and Bornheimers that marked his true purpose. He was proud to call himself a Bornheimer and refused to back down, even in the face of an armed mob. He spoke passionately about the qualities of the people of the Sea God and the fury of the Storm should they be shackled by a far off crown. He also spoke of peace with those neighbors regardless of their beliefs and respect for their rights as citizens of Bornheim even if they favored the crown.

When he was named the Dawn Watcher of the temple, the high luminaries of the Temple of Light arrived to oversee his ceremony. It was considered a moment of healing for a city going through a troublesome time.
