Koén Brandr

Passionate Dakarian Lord of Bornheim

Lord Koén Brandr was knighted on the battlefield by his liege lord after acts of heroism and gallantry. Raised on his father's lands at Gravenwatch, he was prepared to enter the clergy, being the third son, when war when the Queen called her subject to war with Irill in the War of the Sun Valley. He served as a Squire to Lord Jakus, a friend of the family. He was gravely injured during the battle in which he was knighted, yet injured so badly he could no longer serve as a knight of the realm. It did offer him the chance to return from Bornheim with honor. While his brothers remained in the east, he oversaw his father's lands and entered the service of Baron Donat Lange, Lord Marshall of Bornheim.

He Y435 he married and quickly had an heir to carry on his family name. However the death of his wife during the birth of his second child left its mark on him. He had seen scores of men die on the battlefield in the worse sort of agony, but he could offer the man a quick death. The long, agonizing, and bloody death of his wife was simply too much to bear. He sent his son to his father's land and stayed in his townhouse in the city dismissing most of the servants.

Lord Brandr is a passionate and oft-times hot-headed lord of the realm. His residence in Baymount reflects this with many hunting trophies and decorations depicting great battles. Although he is only moderately skilled with mace, sword, and lance; his desire to prove himself drives him to reckless challenges. He is magnanimous both in victory as well as defeat, heaping praise on any knight that has bested him.

Although his father was a skilled man in the arena of politics, Koén is bored by it rather quickly. It is not that he fails to understand it or dismisses its importance, but rather that nature seems to lead to extremes. He is timid about negotiating deals with his house and lands, sometimes leaving such things to his wife. On the opposite side, once he has decided on a course of action he throws himself fully into accomplishing it. This often makes him seem like the “Sheep and The Bull.”

The Brandr family has been part of Bornheim since the dakarians first settled upon the land. Their lands and manor are several days east of the city and includes the villages Limbach and Heiligenblut. Koén grew up on his family lands before becoming a squire to Sir Gerren Blute in Y420 AH. He was skilled with mace and lance, but not well enough to distinguish himself for one of the Royal Orders.

By Y428 Koén was knighted and had moved into the family residence in the city. His courtship of Lady Adelia was formalized into a marriage and added the farming hamlet of Tafern to his personal holdings.

It was the arrival of Anne of Horne and her son Aelfric breathed new life into him. The possibility of Queen Aurora I being pretender who had Crown Prince Corwyn Reiner assassinated. This made the war in the east more palatable for if the Queen was a pretender then the war was ill-fought. What Koén needed was a clear enemy, a wrong to be righted, and Aelfric arrived just in time to save Lord Brandr from his own self-destructive life.

When he first learned about Ælfric he fell under the young King's personal magnetism. This was a cause worthy of his full effort. He is dedicated to seeing this young man obtaining his birthright.
