Dellock

Dellock is a Chaos Sorcerer, one who has been cursed to forever destroy order and structure in any form. As time passes the power of the chaos that is bound with his soul becomes stronger and stronger, eventually merging with his soul. When that happens he must seek out his counterpart, a woman whose soul is bound by order, and consume her - creating only a single being which will divide and be reborn to begin the process anew. Dellock has already met his counterpart, but has not reached the end of his time yet - a singular event in the history of time.

Dellock is the product of a broken home. His father was a simple workman and his mother was the bored and spoiled daughter of a merchant. She dallied with the men her father employed, eventually becoming pregnant by Dellock's father while he was working at her father's home. Her father forced his daughter to marry, but shortly after the birth she fled the town. Neither Dellock or his father has ever seen her again.

Dellock's father did his best to raise the child, but it was difficult. He needed to put food on the table, so Dellock was often left on his own. He fell in with a bad crowd of kids, with whom he started first doing mischief, then outright crime. This changed upon his birthday of his twelfth year, when the chaos magic within him manifested itself. He was frightened of it at first, but naturally drawn to it too much to ignore it. He knew that magic users were hunted, so he didn't tell anyone, but whenever he could get away, he would find some isolated place and play with his growing power. He quickly learned that his magic could do two things very easily, alter something or destroy it.

Thief

The group of kids he hung with got bolder and bolder in their thefts. Eventually an older group of thieves noticed and recruited the most promising lads to work as lookouts and such. Dellock liked having spending coin for the first time in his life. Rumors about what he and his friends were up to reached his father, and his father confronted him about his life. His father spoke about living a virtuous life, the virtue of hard work and told Dellock that he was old enough to begin working for a living. Dellock wanted none of that and said he didn't want to be poor all his life like his father. This of course resulted in Dellock being thrown out of the house.

So Dellock continued his life as a thief, becoming a passable burglar - often using his magic to augment his skills. Of course, this was never going to last and soon the city watch managed to slip someone into the group to learn who was pulling off these thefts. When the group attempted another large job, the watch was ready. Most of the thieves were caught at the scene. A few managed to evade the net, but were swept up later, since the watch knew all of their hideouts. It was the final blow for the gang - most of the thieves were either hung or were crippled.

A Girl's Life

Dellock, in his desperate attempt to escape, had to draw upon more of his magic than ever before - he lost control. The confusion caused by the explosion allowed him to get away, but it changed him. He was now trapped in the body of a twelve year old girl. He/She did not know it at the time, but he was wearing the face of his/her counterpart, the Font of Light. Severely injured, he/she staggered away.

He/She was found by an older midwife, who nursed Dellock back to health. At the time, the watch was desperate to find Dellock, the only thief known to have gotten away. The temple_of_light was also after him, because of the foul magics that he had used. Fortunately, nobody connected the exotic looking 12 year old girl and midwife's assistant to the missing chaos sorcerer and thief.

For it was in listening to the inquisitor of the Temple of Light haranguing the neighborhood to give Dellock up, that he/she first learned what he/she was. Only he/she thought he/she wasn't that person anymore. For a long period of time, most of a year, he/she wasn't able to access her magic. Dellock now understands that each time his/her magic has failed he/she was releasing some of it into other chaos sorcerers for them to use. He had just let too much magic out at once.

He/She was a fountain - when he/she exploded many dangerous people were able to drink from his power and fulfill their darkest and most chaotic dreams.

That year was a hard year for Dellock, but also a transformative one. With nowhere else to go, he/she stayed with the midwife, and worked as her assistant. The midwife was a kind person, always willing to help and quick to forgive debts. This was a different and new way of dealing with people that Dellock saw up close for the first time. The midwife helped set Dellock on a new path.

Chaos Sorcerer

About a year after the big job, Dellock awoke in his original body. He'd had a vivid dream that night about his power and when he awoke, he also knew that once again it was his to command. He had fully accepted his role as the Chaos Sorcerer and knew he had to leave this area. The midwife had been awakened by his restless dreams and had seen him change. Her kind and generous nature was stronger than her fear of the unknown, and she didn't panic. They did have a heart to heart talk, where she agreed with him that he needed to leave, but she impressed upon him that he must always be kind and generous to those around him.

He put on the torn and damaged clothes he'd been wearing the night of the failed heist, and slipped out of the house. He stopped only long enough to dig up a stash of coins that he had hidden and not told anyone about, and left town. This was the start of his adventuring career.

Fazhoul's Raiders

It was not long after that that he hooked up with Khirgha Mirrin and Fǎzhōul. They managed to do some good together, having a number of adventures and travelling widely.

Dellock's magic is only capable of destruction and change, but the influence of the midwife that “raised” him has driven him to be a healer. He continues to learn more about healing and herbalism from any who would teach him.

The power in him sings not only its dark and chaotic song to him, but he knows that it calls out the chaos that is found across the world. Those stronger than him will be drawn towards him, while he feels himself drawn to those weaker near him. Only one person can be the Chaos Sorcerer and Dellock is determined not to die. He sought out many skilled warriors during his travels - becoming very skilled with sword and shield - in addition to the knife work he learned on the streets.

Dellock came to understand that the magic was going to get out of his control at times, but he was willing to live with that as long as it only backlashed on him. It was when it first backlashed on other people that he first became serious about trying to learn more control of it, leading to the adventure involving his counterpart - which drew him to his counterpart - the Font of Light. They managed to exchange a small measure of each other's power, creating two beings that were no longer pure of purpose, but instead mortals once again with free will.

Fǎzhōul had been trying to teach him while they were together, but there always seemed to be something more important. The Font was a highly educated young girl and Dellock was determined not to be her lesser. Whether it was the reaction from his power or his own internal need, he began to sit down and learn from Fǎzhōul. He has mastered reading and writing in dakarian, as well as picking up bits from a few other languages.

In the end Dellock's power was simply too much and even his new control was not enough to stop a second explosion. This one unfortunately also fell on his nearby friends. Dellock believes the chaos does have a purpose and thus targeted his friend because they were a stabilizing influence on him. He bound and trapped his friends for nearly a year before he finally was able to pulled the power out of them. He nursed them back to health, but left shortly after fearing the same thing would happen again.

Isolated, but with Renewed Purpose

Isolated from friends, Dellock wandered the remote parts of the Iron Mountains and the Kingdom of Dakar. He clutched to the power from the Font of Light to maintain his own sanity, but those with a spark of his power continued to find him. He avoided those he could, but he killed many of them over the ensuing months. Each time he killed the power within him gloried in the kill and drove him further from anyone else.

On battle in particular with a skilled Dakarian Knight left him physically battered and exhausted. When he regained conscious he was on a straw pallet in a simple cabin. An man was tending a fire over which was roasting a haunch of meat. The man cared for Dellock for the next few months as the physically recovered. He was a respected magician in his village until a traveling friar had preached against his “evil”, turning his neighbors and family against him. He lost everything, but managed to escape into the woods where he found Dellock.

Dellock was incensed that a good man could be killed simply because he possessed magic. He understood those wanting to kill him for his magic because he had wrought so much pain upon the world, but this was a good man driven out by fear and ignorance. The villagefolk eventually found the cabin while Dellock was out hunting for supper - they killed the magician and strung up his burned corpse. Dellock gave the man a proper burial, but no blessing to the gods who caused this strife - instead invoking a prayer to something that resonated within him. This inner belief seemed to be order and chaos intertwined and balanced - whatever it was it gave Dellock a sense of purpose.

Many of the magicians that fled the influence of the church in the east settled in Western Dakar. However the growing influence of the Temple made even the west dangerous for them. Some stayed in their new homes and fought, but the Inquisitors with their witch-hunters killed many of them and enslaved those who survived to the temple.

For nearly eight years Dellock uses his those skills he learned from all of the good people in his life to help those magicians that sought to simply live in peace. He travels among the villages mostly passing for a tinkerer, sell sword, or caravan guard. The power of the Shadow Realms that most magicians draw upon calls out to the like nature of his own chaos. He tries to find those magicians hiding in the villages he passes through and helps them leave for a safer life if they so choose.

With the money he had gained during his time as a adventurer he purchases a few merchant's wagons. This small caravan serves as his cover for smuggling magicians out of the reach of the Temple of Light and into Bornheim, where a magician can either hide or at least escape an Inquisitor. Those who work for him in the caravan are not magicians, but understand the true purpose of their employer, but not his true nature.

A new course

When Dellock senses the nearby presence of the chaos power in others he leaves the caravan for a few days and hunts the Agent of Chaos before they can grow in power. In the winter of 460 AH Dellock achieves a goal that he has been working for for nearly ten (10) years - he pulls the power of chaos from somebody without killing them. They are weak and near death, but the man survives and begins to heal.

Dellock has gained a much greater understanding of the power. The flaw of the chaos lords is that no one mortal can be chaotic enough without their mind shattering. So, the more power a Chaos Sorcerer obtains the more their mind crumbles - when they cannot hold any more much of it explodes from them imbuing those around them with the power. They are driven to regain this power, which has grown, which destroys more of their own self-will and control. In the end the mortal Chaos Sorcerer has truly become nothing but chaos.

Dellock, unlike any that have come before them, encountered the Font of Light. She was as rigid as he was chaotic and in the end they “polluted” each other - giving their counterpart some measure of power to resist their internal battle. Dellock can now do what no other Chaos Sorcerer could ever due - exercise self-control over the power. His goal is to never reach the point again where his power explodes uncontrollably. Instead he finds those around him that already cause chaos and implant a small measure of power within them.

By freely giving this power to them he corrupts the pure nature of chaos - giving his “victims” the ability to exercise self-control over their new power. This does not necessarily diminish of the power, but gives these people a chance.

His looks are as fluid as the magic and is forever bound to his soul. Most days he is an slightly smaller than average height (5'6“) male dakarian. His hair is red and constantly unkempt while his eyes shift from light blue to black even while you are looking at him, mostly settling on black when he is suppressing his power. To counter the attention this can draw, Dellock continues to wear the same type of clothes he wore as a street urchin - a simple undyed tunic belted at the waist with rope and makeshift sandals.

His power will ensure that he never really ages; although the age he appears to be as fluid as his eye color. He never really appears old nor does he ever really appear young - just some nondescript adult age.
