Atheis is a magician who grew up in Gostyn, a small fishing village in the Three Kingdoms north of Valparia. While his family were fisherfolk, his life changed when he came to the attention of Wilfrii, a local hedge witch. Wilfrii was feared in the village because of the rumors that she practiced the dark arts of demons and spirits. This meant that Atheis had to go into the dark woods, far from the village, to learn her secrets. She taught him not only the magic of the wood and sea, but the also that of demons and spirits.

One day his father foolishly followed him into the woods and confront his son and Wilfrii. He demanded that the witch leave his son alone and promised his son that the village elder would know how to rid him of any evil the witch did to him. Atheis laughed bound a shark demon that he had signed a pact with to his father's body. Without warning he ordered the demon to kill Wilfrii.

Hours later Atheis stumbled out of the woods with a tale for the villagers. He said that he in the woods gathering grubs with his father when Wilfrii and a monster attacked them. His father attacked the unholy creature and told his son to fetch the men. Several nearby men grabbed weapons and followed Atheis into the woods. They found Wilfrii's body, but not the body of Rigus, outside of her burning cabin. Although they saw signs of the monster it seemed to have fled into the deeper woods.

As the village mourned the loss of Rigus and threw curses upon Wilfrii - Atheis finished moving the stuff he kept from Wilfrii's cabin into a mostly dry cave he found along the shoreline bluffs north of the village. After the demon slew Wilfrii he took what he wanted from her cabin and torched it to hide anything that remained. His demon-father could swim in the deeper waters near the reef, occasionally taking a fishermen - who would assume to be lost to the sea. Meanwhile he would continue his study of Wilfrii's notes and journals.

Dakarian Insurrection

Sofiya and Ludwig led their wagon; along with Briz and Xarth to Gostyn on their way from Valparia to Ulrichstein. They were forced to stay a few days until their wagon could be repaired. During that time a young boy was “taken by the dark sea” as the people of Gostyn whispered. Briz, ever curious, investigated this “Dark Sea” and was taken by Atheis' demon-father to the cave.

Atheis planned on preparing another ritual and summoning a demon into Briz's body. Before the ritual could end Briz's companions had found the cave and drove off both Atheis and the shark demon. The cave was littered with the few remains the shark demon left from his victims he pulled into the sea.
