Eternal Midnight

“A thick cold fog hangs about a foot off the ground. No matter how hard you try it never seems to disappear. No sun or moon hangs in the sky; although everywhere you can look casts the same pale light. Torches, lantern, sound, everything appears muted or warped. This is definately not a place to settle down.” — Book of Cloaked Shadows, 396y

Background

This realm is comprised of everything that inhabits the night. Creatures of myth and legend stalk these hazy lands. The appears to be no single light source as everything seems permenantly grey. Any light source brought into these lands will fail to function work, but fail to shed light beyond its own confines. Even sounds appear muted no matter how loud someone screams.

Dark Lords

These lands are ruled by the Darklords. These creatures are the most powerful of their kind. Seemingly wrapped in the living essense of the night eternally. They send their agents into the world to collect more souls to warp into shadowcreatures. They also war upon each other, but like the realm itself - this is a muted war. Greater agents will kill lesser ones, which in turn will kill their lessers.

These are the seven most powerful beings in the Realms. Their power is unmatached and without question. Through the worship of other beings they can summon forth a small amount of primal power. The constant warring has lead to the death of several Darklords, but their killers replace them quick enough.

Most of the Darklords remain cloaked in a sheath of eternal darkness inpenetratable to all senses. Just gazing upon the nearby shadows can drive mortals insane.

Princes/Princesses of the Eternal Night

These creatures are the rulers under the Darklords. Only a few of these creatures remain independant. They can appear as anything they desire. Unlike the Darklords these creature can walk in the sunlight; although it weakens them greatly.

Dark Riders

These are the most powerful creatures a mortal could expect to command. The Dark Riders are always astride jet-black animals (of some kind). In personal combat they are extremely powerful, but will only fight creatures whose lifeforce they find pleasing. Dark Riders command most of the forces below them. The abhor the sunlight and will even hide during the dusk and twilight.

Nightwalkers

In some ways the nightwalkers are the least powerful of the Darklords creations. They can only be created from a mortal that has pleged their soul to a Darklord. Instead of creating a simple Shadowman these mortal are transformed. They are not hindered by the light and can often travel completely unnoticed. Unlike the Dark Riders or the Shadowmen these beings can shapeshift at will.

Occasionally, they will be assigned to a Dark Rider, but they are usually around doing the bidding of a Prince, Princess, or Darklord. A Nightwalker will retain all of the knowledge they had during their previous life. Additionally, they are apt at learning new skills.

Shadowmen

The weakest of the Shadowcreature these are the souls of people killed by Dark Riders. They can also be created by people pledging their souls to a Darklord and deemed unworthy. The Shadowmen serve a variety of purposes, but usually remain shock troops or messengers for mortals attempt to harness a Dark Rider. They are vicious, cruel, and totally without fear or mercy. More than any other Shadowcreature they hate the sunlight.
