Dwarven Military

The core of the Dwarven Military is based upon the family of the dwarf and ties of their dwarven clan. It is not unknown during a long war for an entire family or even a clan to be destroyed. The survivors of these families may join other clans.

Stoneheart Hold

For the clans that comprise what remains of Firock Stronghold and Stoneheart Hold the dwarven military is comprised of Squares, Trupp, Battalion, and Army.

Square

The square is the smallest order of battle. It is comprised of ten (10) lagers of eight (8) dwarves each. In addition each square is expected to have its own support for cooking, cleaning, and mending. Each square is led by a Sergeant, who by tradition is the most heavily decorated dwarf of the most prestigious family. Social standing among the square is paramount as the square fights for the glory of the family and clan.

If a clan cannot field a full square they can elect to field a half-square or “adopt” dwarves into the family during a time of war. Large clans can often field multiple squares.

The square of the family with the highest social standing is called the front square and expected fight along the front-right of the square.

Trupp

The troop is composed of five (5) squares (500-800 dwarves total), plus a squadron of support. The size and nature of their attached squadron depends on the need of the captain who leads them. Most troops will be from aligned clans as inter-clan warfare is a fact of life among the dwarves of Stoneheart.

The squares from the family of the captain are called the Beste Square. Their position is always the right most square.

Battalion

A battalion is five (5) trupps giving approximately three to five-thousand (3000-4000) dwarves. A battalion is lead by a commander traditionally selected for their experience and war-skill than social connections. The commander and their staff are expected to be leaders who plan the tactics rather than lead any individual soldiers. The command staff issues directives, which are carried out by the captains of the troops. A wise commander issues strict directives or risk their trupps reacting individually.

Army

An army is raised only when a Stronghold itself goes to war. This becomes a full effort from all clans who owe blood ties to the Stronghold. These are not words of fealty, but blood bonds that demand allegiance to the cause. Stoneheart hold can raise ten (10) Battalions should the need arise.

The army is lead by a Führer and supported by a council drawn from the command staff of each battalion within the army.

Squadron

A squadron is any unit that exists outside of the whole structure. Squadrons can exist of any size or support any role. Most of the squadrons used are artillery, calvary, engineering, and logistics.
