Lich

A Lich is a powerful undead creature embodied with a spirit or soul. A Lich typically results from someone skilled enough in magic to bind their soul to a phylactery rather than passing on to the afterlife. As long as the phylactery still holds their soul they can protect a measure of their spirit and possess a body. Only the most powerful could split their soul into more than one phylactery, but legends speak of seven being possible.

With only a small measure of their spirit inhabiting the body it will slowly decay. When newly possessed it would be possible for a Lich to walk among people with little notice. Regardless they are not living and have difficulties with things of the Divine Realms like sanctified objects, holy ground, or divine power. Animals often react poorly around a Lich; although the more intelligent beasts like dogs can be trained to tolerate them.
