Gray Wyvern

The gray wyvern (commonly simply called a Wyvern) is the most common wyvern and the one most likely depicted on heraldry and in legends. whatever it strikes. With a large defined torso and a powerful tail ending in a triangular barb, the gray wyvern can be found in any land outside of the polar regions. A solitary creature, only found as a pair when raising young, they are often hunted for sport by the strong or foolish.

Both the mouth and tail of a gray wyvern produce a toxin. The bite of a gray wyvern produces enough toxin to numb their prey making escape very difficult, but their tail is far more deadly. The edges of the triangular tip of the gray wyvern is comprised of sharpened scales they use to slash at their opponent. When agitated the tail produces a caustic toxin that disrupts musculature control of the body. The tail of an adult is strong enough to tear through steel plate.

Gray wyverns are semi-solitary apex predators claiming a territory as their own, driving off any who challenge them. Young wyverns will often share territory with stronger males as long as they don't challenge his authority. A female in her reproductive years will drive off any other wyverns from her territory.

When a female is ready to mate she will being circling her territory challenging all nearby males. The males that respond will attack and work to force her to the ground - they will also drive off any other males. After mating, often leaving both wyverns cut and bleeding, the male will not leave the female - bringing her food while she nests. In a few days she will lay between three to five eggs, which will hatch several weeks later.

Fratricide is uncommon as both parents take an active role in rearing their young. They will be able to fly after several months and completely able to feed themselves by the end of their first year. The family unit will remain together until the young become large enough to defend themselves from larger predators. Typically during their third or fourth year the mother will drive off both her mate and young, reclaiming her territory for herself. She will not being another reproductive cycle for several years.
