Description

D’slatti are small (about 18 inches in length), light brown colored creatures. They have hard plates covering their back and feelers when retracted. They move along on hundreds of small legs eating the small grubs that live beneath the sand. The feelers are extended (unless threatened) and used to sense their surroundings.

Combat

If threatened female will burrow deep into the sand. If this is impossible they will head towards the softest earth can use to burrow into. Males will rub their plates against each other emitting a loud dry rasping sound. If this fails to deter their attacker then they will flee in a manner similar to females.

Reproduction

D’slatti are solitary creatures only meeting during mating season (high summer). Males will gather around a female and fight to the death to mate with her. After mating the male will die. For every male that successfully mates with her the female will grow a long angled spike. Each spike carries hundreds of her young waiting to be injected into a warm-blooded host body.

Pregnant females will travel for hundreds of miles in search of warm-blooded hosts. They will attempt to inject each host with a spike. If successful the host will become sick and weak for a short period of time, but eventually recover while the spawn settle around their lungs. Over the next few weeks the spawn will feed off the target until they are strong enough to burrow out, which kills the host. If threatened while impregnated she will use the spikes as weapons if necessary to escape. While this may result in the waste of thousands of young - the female will do anything to escape.
