Rural Freemen Social

The difference between a Freemen and Servile is not wealth or land. Rather, it is in the degree of personal freedom enjoyed by the freemen over the servile. This freedom does come with a measure of feudal obligation, but in general a freemen is permitted to come and go as they please.

A Freeholder is someone that owns 20-40 acres of land “in fee simple.” This means they owe no rents on the land to the local lord and are free to rent or sell the land.

There is a 10% chance of a freeholder also being wealthy enough to own a horse and be considered Cavalry instead of Footman. This adds a further +3 Status Points, 1 Combat Skill, Riding, and Mounted Combat. These freeholders will typically own 40-60 acres.

Traditionally holding 60-90 acres of land in exchange for military service as mounted or armored sergeants. 20% of Petit Sergeants are of gentle blood, but simply lack the lands necessary to qualify for knighthood. If this is the case then the PC gains all of the benefits of the Feudal Gentry and +2 Status Points.
