Vitale River

The Vitale River is a major river that flows along the border between Selcaria and the Free Cities. During its conquest of the lands south of the Caragan Sea, the legions of the Irillian Army constructed damns along the river. This widened and deepened the river, providing the army with a secure southern flank, in addition to doubling the size of Bend Lake.

The Vitale River runs approximately 220-km (137 miles) from the east to west-southwest flowing along the foothills of the Tenebrae Mountains. The river can be divided into four distinct lengths: Upper Vitale where the Irillian Army built dams; North Vitale its more northern reach; Tenebrae-Vitale where streams from the mountains fill its banks, and the Kilouliki Delta where the waters flow into the Kilouliki Marsh.

Upper Vitale

The Irillian Army built four damns along this section of the river. Additionally they redirected sections of the river to better protect their encampments and forts they built north of the river. Selcaria rebuilt the forts into small shell keeps to protect the nearby villages and deter the Pah'Shar from raiding so far north.

The section of the river is navigable, but boats have to pulled out and transported overland at the eastern damn. The other damns have small river lock constructed on the northern bank to facilitate traffic.

North Vitale

The shortest length of the river and most unnatural, the Vitale flows in a northwestern direction along the Dante Escarpment. The magicians who live in the village along the south bank raised the butte to defend their city. It is known the faces carved into the rock will come alive should the village be attacked. The river is the primary source of water for the village.

In Y316 the village was attacked by mercenaries hired by a Selcarian noble. He was in search for the gold and jewels that are rumored to be stored in the central tower. The mercenaries were forced to drown themselves in the river Master Dante d'Artusio. The master then commanded the river to flow backwards, carrying the bloated corpses to the town where they were hired. When the corpses touched the northern shore a great plague rose up and killed half of the children of the village.

Tenebrae-Vitale

After bending around the butte, the river flows faster as more than a score of streams flow into the river from the Tenebrae Mountains. The riverbed is full of sharp obsidian rocks that causes rapids along its course. The river is navigable, but dangerous as many boats are torn apart in the rapids or smashed by the rocks.

Kilouliki Delta

The banks of the river spread out as the river divides into smaller streams that flow along the flat lands. These streams eventually flow into the Kilouliki Marsh. These streams draw many nearby animals and the predators who hunt them.
