Gesalt River

The Gesalt River flows from the city of Fountainhead until it empties it the Flumen dei Animas.

The Gesalt River can be divided into four distinct area. The Lake Gesalt is the lake from which the river forms; The Chasm is where the river runs through and up the city; the Peaks is the section of the river through the plateau; and the Lower Gesalt as it exists the plateau until it empties into the River of Souls.

Lake Gesalt

The surface area of the lake is not very large at only sixty areas (243,000 m2), but its depth is unknown. It is at least two hundred meters (650 feet) deep. Nobody has been able to go deeper. There are powerful cross currents that occasionally form underwater twisters, which are responsible for pushing the water towards the surface. This deep water keeps the surface water cold. In addition it is believed the water is sufficiently high in iron to disrupt most magic. All attempts at using magic to dive deeper the diver has failed to return.

Several large toothed fish have floated to the surface, most of them scarred from fighting with something beaked.

The Chasm

The river leaves its headwaters and slices through Fountainhead. A some point the water broke apart a section of the shelf and now it flows though this chasm. This is one of the few places were a reverse waterfall can be seen. The water runs up the walls of the chasm until reaching the surface where it runs over the ledge and then once again behaves like normal water. No discovery, mundane or magical, has determined exactly how this happens. Many have discovered the water sprites in the river, but they do not possess the magical ability or strength to move this much water.

The water that flows over the Waterdeep district of Fountainhead eventually falls over the opposite edge and reforms into the river.

Peaks

As the river leaves behind the Fountainhead basin it enters the western section of the Utmarii Plateau. The river skirts along the western edge before finally leaving the plateau.

Lower Gesalt

This section of the river passes through the forest. The river widens out and slows its progress. At some point in the past it meandered more during its passage as several oxbow lakes. The river eventually dumps into the Flumen dei Animas at a wide delta with several small islands dividing the river.

Dangerous

There is something very dangerous in the deeps of the headwaters of the river, but what it is is unknown.
