Gate of the Gods

The Gate of the Gods is the name given to two large alpine tundra peaks that reach high above any other mountain peak in the Iron Mountains. The peaks are clearly not the work of natural forces. There are very few smaller peaks alongside the main peaks. Secondly the stone of the mountains does not match any stone from the nearby mountain ranges. It is vary hard and dense, but brittle enough to shear off when struck hard.

Running between the foot of each peak is a large wall fashioned from the same stone as the peaks themselves. This wall is nearly five kilometers (5 km) thick and reinforced with massive metal bands. A tunnel twenty carts wide runs through the wall, secured on either end by metal doors over 15 meters (15 m) thick. This wall is called Stoneheart Hold and along with the nearby lands is ruled by the Stoneheart Clan. Hundreds of thousands of dwarves live either inside the great hold or on nearby lands. It is the largest population of dwarves remaining in the world.

Buried deep beneath the earth and stone and reaching far into the heavens is one of the Black Gates, The Gate of Stone. The gate itself is the thousands of tunnels that run through the two peaks of the mountains. The power and sounds of the Earthmother resonant through these tunnels, at at one time filled the air with sound so deep it shook the bones. Although most of the tunnels themselves still exist, the harmonious sound no longer no longer rumbles up from the deeps, but instead echos from the winds and grinding of stone.
