Flumen Dei Animas

Flumen Dei Animas or its more common name The River of Souls the the largest and most influential river that flows through the Utmarii Plateau. The river snakes its way through the plateau eventually leaving and continuing its path until it reaches the Isaurus Ocean. The river has worn instead down over time through the layers of sandstone along the plateau.

It is called the River of Souls due to the large number of wandering spirits along its path. Many people who pass in the region will find their souls passing to the afterlife through this river. These wandering spirits could be on the river for decades before passing. This makes passing alongside or near the river after the sun has set more dangerous as the spirits are more active. Although they cannot touch land, they can influence the flow of the river.

The Flumen Dei Animas river begins at Alvajáró Lap in the Blackthorn Mountains from Lake Tükör. After a short run between the slot canyons of the Utmarii plateau the river bends around Grande Assetato Lake before gaining strength from many small tributaries as well as the Marchio and Piegato rivers. This second of the of the river contains many rapids, small falls, and other whitewater making navigation by boat nearly impossible

After passing through the Gyerek Canyon it is joined by the Gesalt River from the Fountainhead Basin and becomes a wide braided river. The lands north of the river are the largest farming and ranching region along the river. As the river exits the valley it meets its largest tributary the Sambuco Soffio. This is the widest and slowest part of the river and is dominated by two lakes. Lake Moro is the deepest of the pair, while Fiestra is the larger.

When the river exits Fountainhead Valley it enters the Altopiano di Sila. Unlike the slot canyons formed in the upper part of the river this plateau is three deep canyons. The bottom of the last canyon is still three-thousand feet (3,000 ft = 900 meters) above sea level while the top is nearly six-thousand feet (6,000 ft = 1800 meters). This is the deepest section of the river with a few rapids as the last of the major tributaries have already added their water.

The final run of the river is a meander the generally flows along a northeast to southwest line. The river is wider and deep enough to allow even small keeled ships to navigate its length via oars. Several civilizations have built settlements along the river and most have to contend with flooding at least once a decade. The land is fertile for most grain crops.

Major Tributaries

Starbells

Called Sampana a Stella, or Starbells, these flowers grow along the river's edge and nowhere else in the world. These flowers give off a slight luminescence when in the presence of spirits. Their scent can drive back spirits and being of the Shadow Realms - they make fae violently ill. Once each year a male Starbell will produce a seed pod. The juice from the seeds can be distilled into a poison deadly to all fae.

Spirit Fish

This small fish has silvery scales and a large armored head. It spends most of its time sweeping up decayed food from the silt of the river. During the night they rise to the surface and roll over on their backs. The scales on their underbellies reflect the light of the moon. During the Spring females will release their eggs into the water for the males to fertilize. The flesh of the fish is very distasteful, but when prepared properly it acts as a intoxicant and hallucin.
