Dread Forest

The Dread Forest is a large mostly deciduous forest consisting of mostly oak, ash, maple, birch, beech, poplar, elm and pine. It runs along the shore of the Black River, 3/4 of its acreage east of the river. It is located along the borders of Irill, Theodova, Selcaria, and the Free Cities. None of these human nations claim the land of the forest; although several have tried to pacify the forest in years past. The forest has proven far too deadly be be conquered.

The forest covers 6,800 km² (1.5 million acres). Along with the Black River that divides the western quarter of the forest from the rest, numerous rivers and small lakes can be found in the forest.

It is known that trolls, goblins, and two different orc tribes live within the forest. Several rumors claim a lost elven city can be found among the trees, but nobody has returned with proof.

Other common animals can be found in the forest, but the gray viper and veroulli are the most dangerous. The gray viper is an ambush hunter that will chase down and strike prey far larger than itself if its territory is threatened. Its venom destroys its victim's humors, leading to death within the hour. The veroulli is a carnivorous bat that hunt in packs. They can be driven into a frenzy from the smell of blood or quick movement.
