Aland River

The Aland River is located in the central part of the Western Realms of the Kingdom of Dakar. It is about 250 miles long travelling generally in a northwest to southeast direction. It eventually empties into the Sibeil Lake.

Most of the river bottom is rich loam and the river sides steep and prone to erosion. This makes cross the Aland River difficult with any type of wheeled cart. The flow is slow enough in most places that within an half an hour a crossing suitable for a person or horse can be found.

The river is deep enough for skiffs and shallow boats to navigate along most of its lengths. There are two rock-filled rapids that are dangerous enough that boatmen have to carry their craft over land and then put in farther along the river.

Main Article: Elfenwald

For most of its length the Aland River runs along the eastern border of the Elfenwald. This forest is populated by dangerous animals, orcs, goblins, and other of their kin. Any boatman who travels by river must be aware of any potential of ambush from the denizens of the forest.

This is the largest section, nearly 2000 feet long (0.6 kilometers), of rocks and rapids in the river. So named because of the many places where the undertow is so dangerous that a full grown man could be pulled under and never seen again. There are good stretches of sandy beaches above and below the Heilsman, making it easy for boats to be carried along the shoreline. Taking a boat through the Heilsmen it the act of final desperation.
