Addar River

The Addar River flows along the western border of Rovopolis, the western most province of Theodova. It is approximately 470 km (292 miles) long. It is formed by the confluence of the Birrigot River and Noxo River. The river flows generally in a southeast to northwest course as it winds its way through the badlands east of the Blasted Lands.

The lower river has a very silty bottom often reaching several feet where it merges with the Kerrik River. The rest of the course the river is mostly a hard rocky bottom or at most a few inches of silt.

For most of its course the river runs at the bottom of a canyon ten to fourteen meters (10-14 meters = 32-45 feet) deep. The limestone canyon has steep sides and wide enough that there are only a few bridges that cross it. Only along the Scio Bluffs are the slopes gentle enough to easily walk from the top of the canyon to the river's edge.

The river can be safely navigated by shallow draft keeled boats or flat-bottomed rafts. There are several stretches where rocks just under the surface are exposed during the dry months. In addition these stretches have dangerous rapids when the river runs high. An experienced riverman can work their way through these stretches, but this is not a river to run by the inexperienced.

Built atop the Scio Bluffs, the city of San Briaforte is the largest settlement on the shores of the river. The fort atop the bluffs has complete command of the river around the city from three large ballistae. The river bed by the river is comprised only of a few inches of silt as the people scrape he clean yearly allowing boats to traffic along the river.

Partial dams have been built using large rocks pulled from the river. This provides three deeper catch basins for the city.

Black-bellied Frilled Eel

The black-bellied frilled eel is only found in this river. It spawns in the confluence where the river forms, eventually making their way downstream during the dry months eventually giving birth along the way. The start of the rainy season the eels migrate north to their spawning grounds again. The eels are venomous are particularly aggressive during breeding and birthing seasons. An adult eel can reach nearly two feet (2 feet) long and as thick as someone's fist.

The eels are a delicacy if the venom sac can be removed without puncturing it. If the sac is punctured the meat is ruined. The venom is not strong enough to kill anybody but small children, but it tastes vile.
